‘From Here To There’ Flickr Project

Posted in Flotsam, Quiz by Alec Soth on September 1, 2010

In connection with my exhibition at the Walker Art Center, I’m creating a series of Flickr group projects that are linked to my photographic process.

Assignment #1: The Treasure Hunt

A trick I use to find pictures is to create a list of things I’m curious about that then go and beat the bushes. Even if I don’t find what I’m looking for, it gets me out the door and moving around in the world.

For our first Flickr Project, I’ve created a list of 10 items to photograph. Shoot as many as you can and post them in our group pool, and then check out our “Discussions” pages to talk about your work. I’ll post some of my favorite images on the Walker Art Center Visual Arts blog. On October 1st I’ll pick my favorite treasure hunter and send them a signed copy of the From Here to There catalogue.

Here’s the list:

Amateur Paintings
Unusually Tall People
Museum Guards
Sleeping Children
Neighborhood bars
Supermarket Cashiers

Happy Hunting,

P.S. You’ll get extra points for combining pictures – I’d love to see an unusually tall museum guard holding a suitcase.

funny, i came across the world’s tallest couple yesterday near where i live – not knowing who they were at the time – but i was just looking at them, fascinated and wondering why are there just standing around at probably one of the busiest spot in the city? passers-by were taking photos of them. i came home and googled for the ‘world’s tallest couple’ and there they were in a video.

Hannah got the ball rolling beautifully on the Flickr Pool:

“This new project comes at a good time for me. We have only one week left in this small town in Taiwan, and I’m going to use the assignment as my own personal kick in the pants. I’ve made a lot of images here in the last year, but there’s never enough, right?

So with the list in mind, I headed out the door this morning on the way to the bus stop and walked past and was re-reminded of this old, eccentric Taiwanese folk shop. This was the first dusty, classic, exotic place I noticed when getting out of the taxi in this town. Here’s a picture of it then!

The owner carves and paints Matzu dolls and collects Chinese folk art. It’s crammed between the nosiest intersection-cum-bus depot in town.

He was just opening up and somewhere in the back not knowing I was snooping around. I snuck in to see if I could find an “amateur painting”. After a year, I still hadn’t explored past the front entry. There was no light but the ambient ray you see in the upper right corner of the frame, shining on this lady, just some demur lady.

I’m more happy that I went in to the shop (finally) than I am about the image. It makes me excited about your listing process. I’m going to spend our last week here trying to keep this list in mind and I look forward to the serendipity it may provoke.”
